For my A+S application, I had a couple very active extracurricular with elected leadership roles (Boy Scouts, an National Honor Society (not NHS), Debate), (3.6, 4.2) GPA, 1390 SAT (680/710), four strong recommendations, 6 AP exams, an independent study, managing a significant service project for the state of Massachusetts, and a bunch of major awards (National, Regional, and whatnot).

I got into Cornell, and the other six schools I applied to. (Including MIT) I figure the key was playing a stringed instrument, and applying to an engineering school. The difficult part is most every college wants well rounded applicants with lots of different activities. Once you graduate, potential employers want a specialist. I wasn't willing to work on brakes for Honda my entire career.
